Exploring the Role of Court Interpreters in KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa examines how court interpreters perform their duties in line with professional ethics within the South African justice system. Using a qualitative case study conducted at the Durban Magistrate’s Court, the book draws on interviews, participant observation, document analysis, and court transcripts to explore interpreters’ awareness of ethical principles, their compliance with the Code of Ethics, and their perceptions of their professional role. The study highlights the challenges interpreters face when balancing impartiality, accuracy and confidentiality with additional courtroom responsibilities. It concludes that clearly defined ethical standards, continuous professional development and institutional support are essential to improve interpreting quality, safeguard language rights and promote fair access to justice in multilingual South Africa.
