Twelve Roman Keys: A Structural History of Ancient Rome in Twelve Poems - Instructor Edition presents Roman history through twelve compressed poems and an expanded instructional framework for examining the historical, physical, and compositional systems behind them.Organized in three movements-Belonging, Transmission, and Persistence-the book explores how Roman systems formed, expanded, transmitted themselves, and endured while undergoing change. Its subjects include adoption and family continuity, patronage, civic religion, citizenship, Greek cultural influence, public spectacle, coinage, language, religious multiplicity, provincial government, delegated authority, and the inheritance of Roman forms. Each poem begins with a paradox triad and joins a documented Roman system to the observable behavior of a keyboard instrument. Pipe organs, square pianos, reed organs, harpsichords, the celesta, player piano, clavichord, and other instruments provide independently observable physical systems through which comparable patterns of pressure, constraint, circulation, repetition, delegation, adaptation, and persistence can be examined. The correspondence is structural rather than symbolic. The instruments do not stand for Rome, and the poems do not reduce Roman history to mechanical analogy. Instead, historical and physical systems remain distinct while revealing comparable forms of behavior.Designed for teaching and close study, the Instructor Edition expands each key with five components: Physical System, Roman System, Structural Correspondence, Absolute Composition, and Discussion. Additional appendices examine empirical phenomena, compositional frameworks, structural mechanisms, paradox triads, and system mapping, while a glossary defines the central terminology of Absolute Composition. At the center of the book is a question about Rome-and about systems more broadly:How can a system preserve itself by allowing itself to change?Across twelve historical and physical configurations, Twelve Roman Keys examines continuity not as unchanged survival, but as continued behavior under changed conditions.

The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....
