The Renaissance is often described as a rebirth: the recovery of classical knowledge followed by extraordinary developments in art, literature, science, technology, and exploration. Twelve Renaissance Spokes approaches that history differently, examining the Renaissance as a system in which inherited structures are recovered, measured, translated, reconstructed, circulated, and revised.Organized as twelve short poems in three movements-Recovery, Reconstruction, and Circulation-the book follows the changing conditions through which inherited forms become available for new uses. Recovery considers the renewed availability of materials and practices from the past. Reconstruction examines what happens when those materials encounter observation, comparison, measurement, and new methods of production. Circulation follows altered forms as they move through printing, translation, navigation, exchange, and continued revision. Each poem begins with a Paradox Triad identifying three related historical conditions whose relationship generates the structural problem of the composition. The poems are composed using Absolute Composition, a method developed by J. A. Gucci that asks not primarily 'What does this represent?' but 'How does this behave?' Meaning emerges through observable relations involving pressure, threshold, transformation, repetition, transfer, interruption, balance, and change.Throughout the volume, Renaissance historical systems are placed in structural correspondence with physical systems drawn from bicycles and cycling. Repair, wheel behavior, lighting, gearing, unusual bicycle configurations, coordinated riding, articulation, and balance provide independently observable physical conditions through which historical behaviors can be composed. These bicycle systems are not symbols or allegorical substitutes for Renaissance people, institutions, or events. The historical and physical domains remain independent; their correspondence occurs through behavior.Across the twelve poems, fragments are recovered, structures are measured, surfaces acquire depth, repetition produces variation, impressions multiply, forms are translated and transferred, and inherited systems return in altered configurations. The sequence ultimately returns to inheritance-not as something fixed, but as material that remains available for continued revision. At the center of Twelve Renaissance Spokes is a single governing question:How can a system create something new by returning to what already exists? The twelve poems do not offer twelve separate answers. Together, they test the conditions under which return can generate change-and how forms can remain continuous precisely because they are capable of transformation.

The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....
