J. A. Gucci
Twelve Renaissance Spokes: A Structural History of the Renaissance in Twelve Poems - Instructor Edition provides a framework for teaching, studying, and discussing J. A. Gucci’s structural-history poetry. The collection approaches the Renaissance through a governing question: How can a system create something new by returning to what already exists?Twelve poems examine that question through three movements-Recovery, Reconstruction, and Circulation-and twelve paradox triads drawn from Renaissance history. The sequence moves from the recovery of inherited structures, through their reorganization, to their circulation in altered forms. Each poem also contains an independently observable physical system drawn from bicycles and cycling. Fork realignment, thread restoration, wheel truing, custom bicycle construction, cornering, illumination, variable transmission, coordinated group riding, and other cycling systems provide physical behaviors that enter into structural correspondence with Renaissance historical systems. These physical systems are not metaphors or symbols for Renaissance history. The historical and physical domains remain independent. Their relationship emerges through shared observable behaviors such as constraint, restoration, measurement, attribution, deformation, projection, variation, coordination, impression, transfer, articulation, and correction. The poems are composed using Absolute Composition, a structural method developed by J. A. Gucci that approaches the poem as an organized system of observable relations. Its central question is not 'What does this represent?' but 'How does this behave?'The Instructor Edition expands each poem through five sections: Physical System, Renaissance System, Structural Correspondence, Absolute Composition, and Discussion. Together, these sections identify the independent systems, examine the behavior they share, analyze how that behavior is organized through language and form, and provide questions for classroom discussion. The objective is not to establish a single required interpretation but to support readings through observable evidence and defensible structural relationships.Additional materials include empirical and technical frameworks for the bicycle systems, analyses of compositional mechanisms, a taxonomy and mapping of the twelve paradox triads, and a glossary of central terms.Designed for classroom use and independent study, the Instructor Edition provides historical, empirical, and compositional frameworks for examining how inherited structures can remain continuous through transformation. What returns does not return unchanged.
