This study aims to analyze the obligation under international law to return cultural property in cases of illicit trafficking (theft or illicit export) through the history of relevant conventions, notably the 1970 UNESCO Convention and the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention. However, this study reveals that there are numerous limitations to the implementation of the regime governing the restitution of such property.
