El Síndrome de Intestino Irritable (SII) es un trastorno funcional del tubo digestivo crónico y benigno que cursa con dolor y/o hinchazón abdominal y alteración del ritmo de las deposiciones pudiendo tener estreñimiento, diarrea o la alternancia de ambos. Se considera una patología muy frecuente ya que tiene una incidencia del 10-15% de la población, con una mayor prevalencia en las mujeres. No se califica como un trastorno grave, pero puede afectar mucho a la calidad del paciente en función de la intensidad de su sintomatología, llegando incluso a la exclusión social en algunos casos. En los últimos años, se menciona la dieta baja en hidratos de carbono fermentables (FODMAP: siglas en inglés) y el uso de probióticos como una opción para mejorar los síntomas en los pacientes con SII. Este trabajo revisa la evidencia disponible y los efectos en la sintomatología del síndrome, concluyendo con un decálogo de recomendaciones.
