W 2015 roku kobiety, dzieci i cywile wciąż giną w wyniku wybuchów min przeciwpiechotnych, z których część została podłożona kilkadziesiąt lat temu. Jednak od czasu przyjęcia w 1997 roku traktatu zakazującego stosowania min przeciwpiechotnych liczba nowych ofiar stale maleje. Relacje lekarzy, pielęgniarek i ratowników pracujących w terenie, w dotkniętych tym problemem krajach, przyczyniły się do powstania międzynarodowego ruchu przeciwko tej broni. Decydujący wpływ na przebieg procesu ottawskiego, który doprowadził do przyjęcia konwencji o całkowitym zakazie stosowania min przeciwpiechotnych, miała grupa organizacji pozarządowych zrzeszająca organizacje humanitarne, stojąca na czele tego ruchu. Ponadto organizacje pozarządowe odgrywają istotną rolę w monitorowaniu i wdrażaniu tej konwencji, która przyczyniła się do drastycznego - choć jeszcze nie całkowitego - zmniejszenia liczby nowych ofiar min przeciwpiechotnych.
