Per realizzare opere civili come progetti idraulici, progetti sotterranei e qualsiasi altro progetto che richieda la conoscenza della pendenza locale, è necessario conoscere con precisione l’altitudine normale, che deve essere nota e riferita al Sistema Geodetico Brasiliano (SGB). Questa può essere determinata con il metodo assoluto utilizzando i segnali del Sistema Globale di Navigazione Satellitare (GNSS) o con il metodo relativo utilizzando la livellazione geometrica. Il livellamento geometrico aiuta a descrivere il comportamento dell’altitudine ortometrica (H), che tiene conto dell’accelerazione di gravità, per cui è possibile conoscere la direzione del flusso caratterizzato dallo spostamento dell’acqua in un determinato tratto in funzione della pendenza del terreno, determinata dalla differenza di livello tra due punti. L’affinamento del modello geoidale e la creazione di un modello di anomalie consentono di migliorare la qualità dei valori per l’applicazione diretta nella conversione delle altitudini ellissoidiche (h) in altitudini normali e ortometriche. Le tecniche inerenti alla geodesia geometrica sono state utilizzate per affinare i modelli utilizzando la geostatistica.
