Microeconomics explains the prices you pay, the wages you earn, and the way businesses behave when no one is forcing them to be reasonable. This introduction teaches the whole subject in plain language, and it assumes you are starting from zero. The chapters build in order, each one resting on the last. Every idea gets an explanation and a real example before any symbols appear, so if you can read a grocery receipt and split a dinner bill, you have enough math to start. The examples come from ordinary life: a shorter checkout line, a canceled streaming subscription, a raise you decided to ask for. The chapters cover: - Scarcity, opportunity cost, marginal thinking, the production possibilities frontier, and how incentives quietly change what people do - Supply and demand, and how a market settles on one price with nobody in charge. You also see what breaks when a price is held too high or too low, which explains ticket scalping and gas station lines - Elasticity: why raising the price of insulin barely changes what people buy, while raising the price of one soda brand sends shoppers to another shelf - Consumer choice on a fixed budget, diminishing marginal utility, indifference curves, and the income and substitution effects behind an ordinary shopping trip - Business costs, the U-shaped average cost curve, sunk costs, economies of scale, and the difference between shutting down for now and exiting for good - Competitive markets where entry and exit grind profit toward zero, then the opposite case: monopoly pricing, deadweight loss, price discrimination, oligopoly, cartels, and game theory including dominant strategies and Nash equilibrium - Labor markets, human capital, monopsony employers, unions, and what the evidence actually says about minimum wage laws - Market failure: externalities, Pigouvian taxes, tradable permits, the Coase theorem, public goods, free riding, adverse selection, and moral hazard Written for readers starting a first economics course, self-taught learners working without a lecture hall, students reviewing for an AP or introductory exam, and anyone curious about why an airport shop can charge ten dollars for a bottle of water when the corner store can’t. Every chapter ends with discussion questions, and worked example answers let you check your reasoning instead of guessing whether you got it right. A historical timeline traces the subject through Aristotle, Ibn Khaldun, the School of Salamanca, and the arguments that came after, so the ideas arrive with their history attached. A glossary defines every term in one place, and a reading list points toward sensible next steps. Once you reach the end, you may not necessarily think like a professional economist, and that’s okay. The goal is smaller and more useful: the prices around you, the number on your paycheck, and the strange behavior of the businesses you deal with every week stop feeling random.

In a comprehensive a...
