L’Ucraina è uno dei paesi cruciali per il mantenimento della stabilità e della sicurezza in Europa. A causa della sua situazione geopolitica, l’Ucraina dipende sia dalla Russia che dall’Occidente e quindi è molto difficile per questo paese giovane seguire una politica estera marcatamente filo-occidentale o filo-russa. Mentre lotta contro questo dilemma, l’Ucraina deve affrontare molti fattori esterni che contribuiscono alla situazione. La domanda che occorre porsi è se i fattori esterni siano gli unici determinanti della situazione attuale dell’Ucraina o se vi siano anche altri fattori. In realtà, i fattori interni che influenzano la politica estera dell’Ucraina non devono essere sottovalutati. Tuttavia, gli attuali studi neorealisti sulla politica estera ucraina esagerano il ruolo dei fattori esterni e trascurano il ruolo essenziale di quelli interni. Con la presente, vengono analizzati la politica estera ucraina e i suoi determinanti interni dal 1991, con particolare attenzione al periodo successivo alla Rivoluzione Arancione. Viene inoltre discusso l’impatto dei fattori politici, economici e culturali sulla politica estera ucraina e sulla questione della Crimea.
