A recarga das águas subterrâneas foi estimada na zona de Basant Nagar, em Chennai, utilizando técnicas de recolha de águas pluviais que recorrem à recarga artificial. Os dados de precipitação para a área de Basant Nagar (distrito de Chennai) foram recolhidos durante o ano de março de 2009 a fevereiro de 2010. Os poços de recarga são as fontes de recarga das águas subterrâneas na zona de estudo. A quantidade total de água que fica disponível para o consumidor depende da precipitação total num ano e da superfície do telhado disponível para recolha para recarregar o aquífero. A recolha de água da chuva pode ser utilizada tanto para fins interiores como exteriores em aplicações residenciais, comerciais e industriais. A água da chuva recolhida pode ser utilizada durante a seca.
