L’energia di gradiente salino (GSE) può essere sfruttata dalla miscelazione di due masse d’acqua con diverse concentrazioni di sale. Le foci dei fiumi sono sistemi in cui è possibile ottenere questa energia, poiché offrono una grande quantità di risorse idriche e masse d’acqua con salinità diverse. Studi precedenti mostrano che dalla foce del fiume Magdalena si possono estrarre 23,6 TWh/a; tuttavia questa stima deve essere perfezionata a causa della variabilità inter-annuale e intra-annuale del cuneo salino', in quanto le variazioni della concentrazione di NaCl influenzano il potenziale netto di EGS; inoltre, occorre considerare i costi energetici per il trasporto all’impianto. L’effetto della variabilità del cuneo salino sull’utilizzo dell’EGS è stato studiato utilizzando i risultati delle simulazioni del modello idrodinamico MOHID. Questo studio presenta come ottimizzare il potenziale specifico (SSP) dell’EGS. Vengono inoltre stabiliti il flusso ecologico per la foce del fiume Magdalena, il flusso di progetto per l’impianto di generazione EGS e il fattore di estrazione.
