Wild Kin: Embracing Our Animal Family opens with an admission: that somewhere in adulthood, Amanda Mander stopped feeling like an animal among animals. Raised by an American father and an Italian mother, and shaped by a life scattered across Indonesia, Sweden, Italy, and New Zealand, she found herself strangely illiterate in the language of the wild world around her-a fluency the book argues most of us have quietly lost and can just as quietly recover. The memoir moves through a series of direct encounters with wild animals-among them orangutans, rhinos, and penguins-each one anchoring a chapter that braids on-the-ground conservation reportage with personal memory and reflection. In the presence of a species under pressure from human expansion, Amanda finds herself contemplating how conservation works and how often humans relate to wild animals from a distance. Each encounter is also an ethical reckoning. Wild Kin doesn’t romanticize wildlife tourism-it interrogates it, including the author’s own complicity, asking what it actually means to seek out an animal in her home rather than simply consume the experience of having done so. That tension between longing and responsibility runs underneath the book’s warmer, more lyrical passages, keeping the sense of wonder honest rather than sentimental. As the book progresses, the scale of the story narrows-from remote conservation sites to Amanda’s own backyard in the Pacific Northwest, where she supports her wild neighbors. That shift is deliberate: the book’s closing movement argues that kinship with the wild isn’t only found on the other side of the world, but can be practiced, in miniature, wherever a person is willing to pay attention. 6
