This book is about what most poetry books are about. Death, Life, Birth, the Sun, Flowers, Love - that kind of thing. It even has a few butterflies in it. Originally I thought about including a very nice poem I had about a noble Indian looking out toward the horizon with a tear in his eye. But I decided to leave that one out. Also I had a really poignant poem about a lighthouse. It was guiding a boat full of terrified orphans to safety. I left that one out too. I’d like to say that this book will cause you to see ordinary things in a new way, but how would I know? I have no idea how you already see things. The truth is that these poems might corrupt your mind.

    K D Halliwell
The ambiguously titled Love Bites is the debut offering from K D Halliwell, a Milton Keynes based author who describes the collection as a document of her twenties. Original and with a format that stands out from the ordinary, it is proving particularly well-received by those who “don’t normally like poetry”. Originally written by hand, the author has traversed a fine line betw...

  • Polishing the Silver
    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

  • One Kiss
    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

  • The Ontology of I/Thou
    Jay Edson
This is an autobiography of sorts. My primary agenda, though, is not to give the reader a coherent account of my life. Rather I use my recollections of an odd assortment of intense experiences as jumping off points for some philosophical and religious reflections. The experiences are always as much about someone else as they are about me - hence the emphasis on I/Thou. It shou...

Coming to terms with the sudden loss of billions of humans in a single event has so long been an underlying theme of stories that the genre has its own name -- the post-apocaplyptic novel. Many deal with the practical dramas and demands of such an event, and many with the sociological ones implicit in rebuilding human society from what scraps remain. Few books, though, have eve...
