La historia se sitúa en la época del Renacimiento tardío y se desarrolla en las cortes europeas más poderosas de esa época: Inglaterra, Francia, y el Sacro Imperio Romano Germánico, cuyos reyes apreciaban el valor testimonial y simbólico de los retratos, convirtiéndose en mecenas de esta disciplina artística. Eleanor Shepard es la protagonista que, en su anhelo por ser pintora, no duda en utilizar todos los medios a su alcance, incluso renegar de su género, para colocarse de aprendiz en el taller de Hans Holbein, y después emigra a Venecia para aprender los secretos de los grandes maestros.
