De Russische revolutie van 1905 schokte de wereld. In een achtergebleven land dat net militaire klappen had gekregen en geleid werd door een dictatoriaal regime kwam de bevolking in opstand. Een golf van stakingen legde het land lam. De kracht van een politieke algemene staking werd op grote schaal aangetoond. Vanuit de strijd ontstonden de eerste arbeidersraden, ofte sovjets, gericht op zelforganisatie van de beweging. De revolutie van 1905 liep uiteindelijk vast en het autoritaire bewind draaide in de daaropvolgende jaren alle democratische verworvenheden terug. Langs de andere kant was deze revolutie de algemene repetitie voor de gebeurtenissen van 1917. Leon Trotski was een actieve deelnemer aan de revolutie en brengt in dit boek het relaas ervan.
