One baseball organisation. Four established homes. More than a century of championships, financial crises, stadium disputes and cities left behind. The Wandering Ball Club traces the extraordinary journey of a professional baseball franchise from its birth in Philadelphia through its years in Kansas City, its championship eras in Oakland, its temporary stay in Sacramento and its planned future in Las Vegas. The story begins with Connie Mack, two Philadelphia dynasties and the construction of one of baseball’s earliest modern stadiums. It follows the financial pressures that repeatedly broke apart championship teams, the family dispute that ended the Philadelphia era and Kansas City’s passionate welcome to major-league baseball. The narrative then examines Arnold Johnson’s controversial relationship with New York, Charlie Finley’s colourful and confrontational ownership, and the young players developed in Kansas City before becoming champions in Oakland. It recounts the rise of the Swingin’ A’s, three consecutive World Series victories, the arrival of free agency and the rapid dismantling of another great team. Later chapters explore the Haas family’s restoration of the franchise, the Bash Brothers, the earthquake-interrupted Battle of the Bay, the Moneyball era and the repeated search for a modern stadium. The book follows the failed proposals in Oakland, Fremont and San Jose, the collapse of the Howard Terminal negotiations, the final game at the Oakland Coliseum, the temporary move to Sacramento and the still-unfinished journey towards Las Vegas. Written as a fact-based, chronological narrative, this book is not merely the history of a baseball team. It is an examination of who controls professional sport, why franchises relocate, how stadium economics shape civic decisions and what supporters lose when an organisation carries its name and records somewhere else.
