The wheels hummed on the rails, as 403 roared on and on into the black of night. Jock and Tom McNair were off --and they were sitting next to the pilot in the cab of the engine. For their part in a daring rescue, the boys had been rewarded with a trip across Canada, from Winnipeg to the Rockies, aboard a fast freight -- the dream of their lives come true, a glorious adventure dampened only by the mysterious stranger who haunted the caboose all along the line.Rarely has the excitement and irresistible appeal of railroading been so dramatically woven into such a thoroughly appealing story.
