Complete and unabridged with unpublished material, Dawson’s observations during his 1878 survey of the Queen Charlotte Islands concerning the Haida culture are presented. In this he had a special interest as an anthropologist, over and above his work as a scientist for the Geological Survey of Canada. From 1875-1898 he explored the northwest coast, mapping, measuring, observing, writing, taking glass-plate photographs and drawing. His sketches from another 1878 notebook are included.
