Mark Fargo loves being on the road. Unless you’ve ridden, it’s hard to describe that feeling of freedom and control of your own destiny. Mark engages the road with respect and seeks the two and four lane less traveled roads. There’s a lot of beauty and awe in national parks but a lot of his great photographs are from outside the parks or on less traveled highways. There have been many moments where he has turned around because something caught his eye peripherally. He has occasionally had to take some long walks to capture a shot because the shoulders along those roads are dangerous or have no space to park. When Mark photographs a landscape he’ll often take it from many angles, sometimes walking around to another side to see it from a different perspective. He shoots from trees, hills or on the ground. Mark likes to include other parts of a scene, including something unusual that frames the focus. It adds to the whole picture instead of just seeing one object. He doesn’t like to photoshop any of his pictures because he wants you to see just what he sees and hopes that you experience that moment as he has. Motorcycle Haiku is essentially a reflection of the daily travels of a lone man, in his element, on his ride, recording his journey with no set itinerary, no reservations and no timetable restricting his experience.

The ambiguously titled Love Bites is the debut offering from K D Halliwell, a Milton Keynes based author who describes the collection as a document of her twenties. Original and with a format that stands out from the ordinary, it is proving particularly well-received by those who “don’t normally like poetry”. Originally written by hand, the author has traversed a fine line betw...

  • Polishing the Silver
    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

  • One Kiss
    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....
