Este panorama histórico, que se centra esencialmente en el ámbito europeo y anglosajón aunque con una atención especial al espacio hispánico, está dividido en cinco apartados en consonancia con lo planteado en la Guía Docente. En el primero se examinan reflexiones y teorías destacadas sobre los géneros narrativos desde la antigüedad grecorromana hasta las teorías realistas y naturalistas de finales del xix. El segundo se centra en las teorías realistas y naturalistas y del formalismo ruso y la estilística, Bajtin, y la crítica anglosajona, francesa, alemana y española en la primera mitad de la centuria. El tercero se dedica básicamente a la sociología, el marxismo, el psicoanálisis y la psicología. Los estudios narrativos de base lingüística o semiótica ocupan el cuarto. Y el quinto, trata de las principales aportaciones sobre la narrativa en los siglos xx y xxi: la hermenéutica y las teorías sobre el papel del lector, la crítica del poder y la deconstrucción, la crítica feminista, los estudios culturales y la narratología cognitiva.Esta edición recopila los cinco volúmenes se publicaron por separado apto como material docente. 10
