It turns out Salem’s most enduring companions were not witches or ghosts-but the dogs who stayed. From the fearful days of the Salem Witch Trials, when dogs were cast as spectral accomplices and living evidence, to the bustling wharves of the Age of Sail, where they guarded cargo and comforted sailors, to the sidewalks, parks, and cafés of modern Salem, dogs have lived alongside the city’s people through every transformation.Tails of Salem: The Untold History of Dogs in the Witch City traces the evolving relationship between humans and dogs across more than three centuries. Through archival research, historical vignettes, and intimate moments drawn from Salem’s records and memory, the book reveals how dogs reflected-and often shaped-the city’s shifting values around labor, family, care, and community. This is not just a history of dogs in one city. It is a story about how culture forms-how fear shapes perception, how crisis reshapes connection, and how communities define belonging. In Salem, dogs did not just become pets. They became partners, family members, and a kind of connective tissue in a city defined by reinvention.Today, Salem is more than dog-friendly-it is dog-centered. Dogs anchor social life, soften public space, and help strangers become neighbors. Understanding how that happened reveals something deeper about the city itself-and what it means to belong.
