Ob in der Schule beim Referat halten, im Studium bei einer mündlichen Prüfung, bei einem Date, in einem Fahrstuhl oder beim Reklamieren im Geschäft - so unterschiedlich diese Situationen auch sein mögen, sie haben alle eines gemeinsam: die Angst, von den anderen negativ bewertet zu werden. Diese Angst kann verschiedene Gefühle auslösen und in Stärke und Form variieren. Doch erst, wenn sie als behindernd oder belastend empfunden wird, kann man möglicherweise von einer Angststörung, einer Sozialen Phobie sprechen. Als erstes muss diese „normale' Angst von der krankhaften unterschieden werden. Danach werden die verschiedenen Gefühlszustände der sozialen Angst betrachtet, bevor die Soziale Phobie genauer untersucht wird. Hier werden neben den Symptomen auch die historische Entwicklung bis zu den aktuellen Erklärungsmodellen dargestellt und schließlich verschiedene Therapieansätze vorgestellt werden.
