W niniejszej publikacji przedstawiono przegląd obecnego systemu EIA w Nigerii pod kątem jego skuteczności w zarządzaniu środowiskiem w delcie Nigru. Zbadano alternatywne sposoby wzmocnienia obecnego systemu EIA poprzez przyjęcie regionalnego podejścia do zarządzania środowiskiem w delcie Nigru. W rezultacie odkryto, że nakładające się kompetencje i obowiązki ministerstw oraz brak zasobów w kluczowych agencjach mają poważne konsekwencje dla zarządzania środowiskiem i egzekwowania przepisów. Zaproponowano kilka środków mających na celu wzmocnienie obecnych ram zarządzania środowiskiem w Nigerii. Zaproponowano stosowanie strategicznej oceny oddziaływania na środowisko i zgodność z normami systemów zarządzania środowiskowego (ISO 14001), a także włączenie odpowiednich regionalnych, stanowych i lokalnych agencji rządowych w zarządzanie środowiskiem w delcie Nigru. W niniejszej publikacji omówiono również rolę rządu w skutecznym zarządzaniu środowiskiem w Nigerii, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem delty Nigru. Omówiono czynniki osłabiające skuteczność systemu EIA w ochronie środowiska delty Nigru przed skutkami działalności związanej z wydobyciem ropy naftowej i gazu ziemnego.
