Como en todas las sociedades del mundo antiguo, la cultura mixteca prehispánica fundamentaba el origen del poder a través de la manipulación de símbolos e instrumentos que habían sido creados por los dioses. Los gobernantes del México Precolombino eran los únicos individuos capaces de ejercer el poder real a través de diversos objetos en los que residían elementos asociados a las deidades. En la Mixteca Precolombina los manuscritos pictográficos o códices son los únicos testimonios escritos que sobrevivieron a la Conquista española y en ellos se puede encontrar el profundo valor simbólico de los instrumentos de poder. El autor a través de un análisis exhaustivo de la iconografía de los códices mixtecos encuentra y desentraña el significado mágico y religioso de los objetos sagrados que formaban parte del poder político de los gobernantes. Bastones, tronos, vestimentas, insignias de guerra, armas y bultos sagrados conforman el complejo grupo de instrumentos de poder que se revelan a través de la pictografía indígena mixteca.
