Salambó se publicó en 1862, cinco años después de la obra maestra de Flaubert, Madame Bovary, y causó una gran sorpresa tanto en los seguidores del autor como en los críticos. La obra se sitúa en el siglo III a.C, durante la guerra de los Mercenarios, poco después de la segunda Guerra Púnica entre romanos y cartagineses, y está construida con personajes reales y ficticios. Fue este tema histórico, tan alejado del realismo de Madame Bovary, lo que sorprendió en la época, sin embargo, el libro se convirtió en un súper ventas y reavivó el interés del público de aquellos años por el periodo romano. Se trata de un libro sensual y violento con gran exotismo, que se refleja, por ejemplo, en las minuciosas descripciones de las ropas de los cartagineses, que llegaron a influir en la moda francesa de la época.
