L’implantation du groupe Canal+ en Afrique francophone a été reçue comme une industrie culturelle du divertissement et d’information de grande envergure qui permet de sortir du totalitarisme médiatique imposé par les gouvernants au détriment des aspirations et désirs des publics.S’appuyant sur une approche interdisciplinaire centrée sur les théories de l’internationalisation des médias, de la réception et de la sémiologie, des industries culturelles, de la géopolitique des médias et de l’approche concurrentielle des entreprises, l’auteur questionne la stratégie d’implantation du groupe Canal+ au Gabon sur le plan économique et culturel. Il montre combien la télévision est présente dans les foyers gabonais, combien également la diversité de l’offre est appréciée par les téléspectateurs. La question du rôle de l’interculturalité est particulièrement instructive, notamment la reproduction des émissions (et le pourquoi), le besoin d’évasion, le rôle de médiation joué par Canal+ et la construction mémorielle qui se fait à travers sa programmation.
