En el agro peruano se cultivan diversas variedades frutales ancestrales, que poseen altas propiedades nutricionales y curativas. Entre estas se encuentra la fruta de tierra Yacón. Esta raíz de frutos tuberosos pertenece al grupo de las leguminosas. Se cultiva en la región interandina del Perú y pocas personas conocen su valor benéfico como un producto alimenticio y para la salud humana. Se la conoce también con el nombre de pelenga, jícama, pipilenga, o nabo mexicano. Esta planta originaria de México, fue trasladada hacia Indonesia, Centroamérica, y luego a la América del Sur, a países como Perú, Ecuador y Bolivia, etc. Las raíces de esta planta son comestibles y de acuerdo a investigaciones efectuadas en Estados Unidos, China y Japón se ha determinado que también es una planta medicinal.
