Ein Mixnet ist ein mehrstufiges System, das verschlüsselte Nachrichten als Eingabe akzeptiert und eine neue, veränderte Ausgabe generiert, wobei kryptografische Operationen und wiederholte Permutationen genutzt werden, um die Nicht-Rückverfolgbarkeit zwischen den Eingabe- und Ausgabemeldungen sicherzustellen. Basierend auf den verwendeten kryptografischen Operationen gibt es folgende Haupttypen von Mixnets und deren Varianten: Entschlüsselung, Neuverschlüsselung, universelle Neuverschlüsselung und hybride Mixnets. Anonyme Kanäle wie Mixnet sind unerlässlich, wenn die Privatsphäre individueller Meinungen von entscheidender Bedeutung ist.
