Plundering Security? The Economic Power of Thailand’s Military represents an in-depth examination of Thai 'khaki capital', exploring the links between the Thai military and economic power. The book traces the evolution of the Thai military’s economic influence from before 1932 to the present day. It shows that the wealth of Thailand’s security forces derives not only from defence budgets but also from the military’s presence on the boards of, and major shareholdings in, public enterprises. Moving beyond familiar accounts of enrichment through weapons procurement, it examines military business activities, including landholdings, investments, golf courses, hotels and more. The book sheds new light on two important issues: the counterinsurgency in Thailand’s Deep South and the labour of 'khaki capital' formed by conscription. It explores a new vision in terms of Thai military officials obtaining economic interest through what might be considered a form of plunder. The book is unique in examining Thailand’s armed forces not in terms of firepower but as an institution seeking economic gain. Most importantly, it is the first book to focus on the many dimensions of Thai military profit-making, a phenomenon that has bolstered the political influence of the armed forces.
