Embora fruto do dualismo político em voga em seu tempo e ainda que tenha sofrido influências de outras obras econômicas que também analisavam a tomada de decisão de modo mais racional, como a Teoria do Eleitor Mediano ou os escritos sociais de Kenneth Arrow, o livro não copia conceitos nem se inspira no que então havia sido escrito, seja em Economia, seja em Política, à esquerda ou à direita do duplo espectro político americano.
