Observing photographs of New York City in shades of gray only - in monochrome - perhaps the first impression to strike the viewer is how little the absence of color diminishes the city as conveyed to us by the sharp-eyed photographer. The gleam, the glitter, the grandeur of the soaring metropolis remain as powerful as ever; we feel only that with the saturated hues of the landscape removed, the lines, the forms and the geometry find greater room to assert themselves, their interplay rising to meet the eye all the more clearly. 3
