Molecole e cristalli, pubblicato originariamente nel 1934 nell’ambito del Trattato generale di fisica a cura del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, è una delle più importanti opere scientifiche di Enrico Fermi dedicate alla struttura della materia e alla teoria dei quanti.Il volume è articolato in tre grandi parti: Molecole, Cristalli e La statistica della teoria dei quanti, attraverso le quali Fermi conduce il lettore dai problemi della struttura molecolare fino ad alcuni dei fondamenti della fisica quantistica e statistica.Nella prima parte, dedicata alle molecole, vengono trattati il legame chimico, le molecole polari e omeopolari, la molecola di idrogeno, le forze di Van der Waals, gli spettri delle molecole biatomiche, i moti di oscillazione e rotazione, gli stati elettronici, lo spin e numerosi aspetti della spettroscopia e della struttura molecolare. La seconda parte è dedicata ai cristalli: geometria e simmetria dei reticoli cristallini, struttura dei cristalli, proprietà elastiche e termiche dei solidi, teoria di Debye dei calori specifici, vibrazioni reticolari, raggi infrarossi ed effetto Raman, reticoli ionici, energia elettrostatica, propagazione delle onde elettromagnetiche e fenomeni ottici nei cristalli.La terza parte, La statistica della teoria dei quanti, affronta l’equilibrio statistico fra gli stati quantici, l’estensione della legge di Boltzmann, la formula di Planck, la quantizzazione dei gas e le nuove statistiche quantistiche, fino alla statistica di Bose-Einstein e alla statistica di Fermi, ai gas degeneri e alla distribuzione statistica degli elettroni nell’atomo.Corredato da 49 figure nel testo, il volume unisce rigore matematico, chiarezza espositiva e straordinario valore storico, offrendo l’occasione di leggere direttamente Fermi mentre presenta alcuni dei problemi fondamentali della fisica atomica, molecolare, dello stato solido e della meccanica statistica nel periodo decisivo della nascita della moderna teoria quantistica.Un’opera di particolare interesse per fisici, studenti, studiosi di storia della scienza e per chiunque desideri avvicinarsi al pensiero scientifico di uno dei maggiori fisici del Novecento.Questa edizione è una ristampa anastatica dell’edizione originale del 1934, riprodotta conservandone integralmente testo, formule, figure e impostazione tipografica.Enrico Fermi (1901-1954), Premio Nobel per la Fisica nel 1938, fu uno dei protagonisti assoluti della fisica del XX secolo. 6
