Manuel de Ágreda, con solo trece años, acaba de ver morir a su padre, un pobre mendigo ciego. A pesar de ello, al fin su hermano ha accedido a su deseo de enseñarle el oficio de maestro arquitecto y va a trabajar como aprendiz en el taller del retablista Félix de Ortega. Allí descubrirá que la hija de este, María, tiene un talento para la talla que muy pocos conocen. Pero no es fácil trabajar como maestro arquitecto en el siglo XVIII: la competencia en el sector es fiera, los clientes hacen lo posible por pagar lo mínimo y muchas veces hay que viajar donde quiera que haya encargos. En estas circunstancias, viajar a Madrid o formarse en una Escuela de Dibujo puede marcar la diferencia, pero eso supondrá un cambio completo en la vida de quienes se decidan a hacerlo. Esta obra relata, de manera fiel, la historia real de los Ágreda, una familia de arquitectos y escultores que vivieron en la transición de los siglos XVIII y XIX. Por las páginas del libro desfilan retablos y esculturas, los inicios de la industria, el descubrimiento de la porcelana española, la Real Academia de San Fernando con profesores como Maella, Ferro o Goya, la Guerra de la Independencia o la represión de Fernando VII. Todo ello visto a través de los ojos de personajes reales que vivieron estos acontecimientos.
