En Los temores de la calle, el cientista político Claudio Fuentes enfrenta esa paradoja con una apuesta clara: escuchar la ciudad, ordenar sus voces y pensar con rigor lo que nos pasa. A partir de decenas de testimonios y escenas cotidianas —de mercados, barrios y trayectos laborales—, este libro muestra cómo el miedo se volvió un organizador silencioso de nuestras decisiones: modifica horarios, rutas, sociabilidades y también la política. Fuentes propone una explicación en tres planos que se retroalimentan: la experiencia individual (alerta, ansiedad, cuidado), las condiciones sociales (segregación urbana, deterioro del espacio público, debilitamiento de redes) y un Estado intermitente que llega a ratos, pero no logra restituir confianza. El resultado es un sentimiento extendido de desamparo. Sin simplismos ni recetas mágicas, el autor combina crónica y ensayo con datos indispensables para mostrar que no basta culpar a la televisión ni prometer “mano dura”. Hoy el escenario es más complejo: se intensifican ciertos delitos violentos (armas, extorsiones, secuestros); se multiplican los videos y cadenas que circulan por el celular con contenidos que aumentan y aceleran la percepción de amenaza; y la justicia se percibe como lenta o desigual. Este libro es una invitación urgente a recuperar los lazos sociales y a exigir políticas públicas que reduzcan el riesgo sin erosionar la democracia.
