La mejor razón para publicar las transmisiones italianas de Ezra Pound puede ser la más simple. Miles de personas han oído hablar de ellas, muchas se han visto afectadas por ellas, pero solo unas pocas las han escuchado o leído.Aquí están.Hay otras razones de peso, la primera de ellas relacionada con la magnitud de su autor. Ningún otro estadounidense -y solo unos pocos individuos en todo el mundo- ha dejado una huella tan profunda en tantos aspectos del siglo XX: desde la poesía hasta la economía, desde el teatro hasta la filosofía, desde la política hasta la pedagogía, desde el provenzal hasta el chino. Si bien Pound no siempre fue totalmente aceptado, al menos fue inevitablemente presente.Pound comenzó a escribir para la radio a finales de 1940. Los primeros guiones que fueron aceptados fueron leídos en inglés por locutores habituales de Radio Roma. En enero de 1941 pudo grabar sus propios discursos, que se emitían, por término medio, dos veces por semana. Escribía los textos en su casa de Rapallo y, en ocasiones, en Roma, adonde viajaba para grabar en discos un lote de entre 10 y 20 discursos. Quería que los discos se transmitieran en un orden concreto, pero las discrepancias entre su sistema de numeración y las fechas en que la Comisión Federal de Comunicaciones (FCC) grabó los discursos ponen de manifiesto que las autoridades italianas no siempre siguieron su plan, aunque en general la desviación no fue grande. Recopilaba noticias e información de los periódicos italianos y de cualquier periódico extranjero que conseguía; de las emisoras italianas y de cualquier emisora extranjera (especialmente la BBC) que podía sintonizar en su radio; de conversaciones con amigos, funcionarios y viajeros; de cartas de amigos en Estados Unidos y otros países; y de su propia biblioteca, que incluía números atrasados de revistas.
