Publicado en 1877 por Julius Bahnsen, uno de los principales representantes de la escuela pesimista alemana del siglo XIX, Lo trágico como ley del mundo y el humor como forma estética de lo metafísico manifiesta el original modo de filosofar de Bahnsen, expuesto en su peculiar estilo literario, caracterizado por una amarga ironía y un corrosivo humorismo. En él presenta in nuce su estética, y los rasgos fundamentales de su «pesimismo de la contradicción», que se traduce en una reinterpretación de las categorías estéticas de la «tragedia» y el «humor».
