Posiblemente se trata de la zarzuela más popular y tarareada en España y la más conocida en el resto del mundo (The party of the Paloma). Sin duda es la obra cumbre del conocido como género chico, el primer musical de la historia que ha sido difundido en tres películas (1921 -muda, pero con una orquesta en vivo-, 1935 y 1963). Se ha representado por profesionales y aficionados cientos, quizás miles, de veces en teatros, centros de enseñanza y plazas públicas desde su estreno en 1894. El libreto fue escrito por Ricardo de la Vega y Tomás Bretón lo retocó y puso música en poco más de dos semanas, cuando los actores ya estaban memorizando el texto. El estreno fue un éxito que se ha mantenido durante más de ciento veinte años y que ha dado fama sobre todo a Tomás Bretón, aunque no menos famoso es el texto del libreto de Ricardo de la Vega que ahora publicamos con el deseo de que, además de ser representado, sea leído como un libro muy entretenido y divertido. 10
