Horacio Quiroga (Salto, Uruguay, 31 de diciembre de 1878 Buenos Aires, Argentina, 19 de febrero de 1937) es considerado uno de los padres del cuento moderno. La maestría con la que concebía sus narraciones le ha ganado el aprecio y la admiración en todo el mundo y, pese al tiempo transcurrido, la mayoría de sus escritos no han perdido actualidad.En este libro presentamos una selección de sus mejores cuentos para niños, la mayoría extraídos de su popular libro Cuentos de la selva (1918), inspirado en su vida en la jungla sudamericana, donde vivió varios años con su familia, junto al río Paraná. Sus relatos para niños, que continúan y actualizan la tradición de la mejor literatura oral para infantes, y de las fábulas, tienen la virtud de instruir al tiempo que divierten y presentan aventuras veraces con las que los niños pueden viajar a parajes recónditos y conocer el hábitat y las costumbres de animales diversos, personificados como en las fábulas y que representan conductas humanas. Al finaldel libro hemos añadido el Manual del perfecto cuentista y su Decálogo del perfecto cuentista, textos en los que Horacio Quiroga explica los principios básicos de su escritura y aconseja a los autores principiantes cómo abordar este difícil género narrativo.
