Nina es una joven psicóloga que, embarazada de su segundo hijo, debe guardar reposo debido al estrés por la desaparición momentánea de su esposo, reportero gráfico en la guerra de los Balcanes. Aprovecha entonces la novedad de este tiempo libre para escribir sus memorias y como ejercicio para entender las visiones que la acompañan desde la infancia. Una casualidad la lleva a descubrir una especie de zulo en el sótano de su edificio, donde encuentra una libreta manuscrita con otras memorias, las de un personaje llamado Spatz que, al parecer, vivió en aquel pequeño reducto en los años treinta. Una extraña conexión entre Nina y Spatz va aclarándose durante la traducción de las memorias, cruzando la realidad entre los años treinta y el final de siglo XX en Barcelona y sacando a la luz los vínculos de Spatz con el espionaje nazi en España, durante los años previos al golpe de estado, y con la Ahnenerbe y la búsqueda de objetos sagrados. Todo en la vida de Nina parece haber sido un juego de pistas hasta llegar justo a ese momento preciso; consiguiendo que toda su familia se implique en la búsqueda de referencias reales, no exentas de peligro al remover temas silenciados tan largo tiempo. En esta búsqueda, nada ni nadie acabará siendo lo que parece.
