Hong Kiltong, a la manera de Tristán o Amadís de Gaula, es un héroe legendario de la literatura coreana. La historia de Hong Kiltong, escrita entre finales del siglo XVI y la primera década del XVII, es la primera novela coreana escrita en la lengua autóctona. Desde 1443 los coreanos dispusieron de un alfabeto, el hangul, que les permitía prescindir del uso tradicional del chino. Desde fecha temprana, la obra gozó de una extraordinaria popularidad debido, en primer lugar, a que gran cantidad de lectores pudieron acceder a ella fácilmente, a diferencia de obras anteriores escritas en chino y sólo accesibles a un limitado círculo de letrados; y, en segundo lugar, al carácter maravilloso y legendario de sus aventuras, ejecutadas por un héroe mítico –hijo ilegítimo de un noble– que, a la manera de Robin Hood, se propone enmendar la injusticia, favorecer a los pobres y perseguir a los funcionarios corruptos.
