Cette étude analyse l’expansion de la colonisation gréco-romaine occidentale à travers la Méditerranée jusqu’à la péninsule ibérique. La fondation de villes coloniales gréco-romaines dans la péninsule a enregistré la diffusion de l’hellénisation et de la romanisation dans toute l’Hispanie, exprimée par l’urbanisme et l’architecture, qui ont été laissés à la postérité principalement à travers les ruines de monuments et de bâtiments trouvés in situ. Le processus de romanisation a été mis en évidence dans cette étude par l’analyse des vestiges archéologiques, architecturaux et urbains de la capitale de la province d’Hispania Ulterior de Lusitanie, la ville coloniale romaine d’Emerita Augusta, à l’époque du Haut-Empire romain. À travers la colonie d’Emerita, ce livre dévoile la longue influence gréco-romaine enregistrée dans les caractéristiques d’une ville coloniale romaine, souligne la magnificence et l’influence d’une ville provinciale à son époque et révèle l’importance de cette culture dans l’Antiquité ainsi que ses reflets dans la Mérida d’aujourd’hui.
