In the Cold

In the Cold is a Cold War espionage novel set in East Germany, where surveillance, ideology, and divided loyalties shaped every aspect of daily life.Set primarily in Berlin, the story follows a man living under constant pressure - from the state, from those around him, and from the identity he has been forced to construct in order to survive. This is not a conventional spy thriller driven by action or spectacle, but a psychologically grounded exploration of what it means to live a double life inside a closed system.Drawing on authentic Cold War intelligence practices and the lived realities of East Germany, In the Cold examines the human cost of secrecy, the erosion of personal truth, and the moral compromises demanded by life under sustained surveillance while living undercover. The technical detail is carefully researched and integral to the atmosphere, reinforcing the credibility of the setting without overwhelming the emotional core of the story.Originally written during the author’s first battle with cancer and revisited a decade later during a second, the novel is shaped by themes of identity, endurance, and survival - not as autobiography, but in its emotional truth. This revised edition has been professionally edited for clarity and precision while preserving the raw psychological intensity at the heart of the book.Designed as a long-form, immersive read, In the Cold will appeal to readers of intelligent espionage fiction who value depth, realism, and historical authenticity. A historical annex provides additional context on Cold War Berlin and intelligence practices for readers interested in the background behind the story.
