Cook battezza un fiume il Tamigi, getta l’ancora nella baia delle Isole, doppia il capo Nord sotto un uragano, poi viene a carenare la nave nello stretto della Regina Carlotta, dove prende possesso del paese in nome del re.Resta da dimostrare ciò che Cook sospetta da settimane: uno stretto separa davvero le due isole. Concluso il giro dell’Isola del Sud, il consiglio degli ufficiali decide ad Admiralty Bay e punta a ovest, verso una terra ancora assente da ogni carta europea. Dopo una lunga traversata del mar di Tasman, una costa sconosciuta si staglia finalmente a Point Hicks: la Nuova Olanda.A Botany Bay il primo contatto si interrompe bruscamente: gli Aborigeni brandiscono le loro zagaglie davanti alle scialuppe inglesi, un marinaio muore e riposa sotto la sabbia. L’Endeavour risale poi verso nord lungo una costa intera ancora priva di nome europeo, seminando battesimi su ogni capo, fino a quella punta che Cook chiama Tribolazione, perché lì, scrive, cominciarono tutte le sventure.Questo secondo tomo del giornale autentico di Cook conduce il lettore, giorno dopo giorno, dalle baie maori alle scogliere dell’Australia, sul filo di una scoperta in cui ogni capo doppiato apre un pericolo nuovo, fino al momento in cui l’Endeavour si addentra nelle acque strette della Grande Barriera Corallina.Questo tratto del viaggio segna una svolta: è qui, a Botany Bay e poi lungo diverse centinaia di chilometri di una costa del tutto sconosciuta agli europei, che la spedizione di Cook mette piede per la prima volta sul suolo di quella che diventerà l’Australia. Cook battezza la baia in base al raccolto botanico inedito che il naturalista Joseph Banks e il botanico svedese Daniel Solander vi raccolgono, mentre ogni capo doppiato riceve un nome inglese che figura ancora oggi sulle carte.Il testo qui seguito è il giornale personale di Cook, redatto giorno dopo giorno a bordo dell’Endeavour, distinto dai racconti rimaneggiati che l’editore John Hawkesworth pubblicherà nel 1773 per il grande pubblico.
