Lo que hoy conocemos como dinero, en los pueblos primitivos, adopto múltiples formas. Así, antes de que las civilizaciones inventaran y comenzaran a utilizar las monedas como medida del valor de los bienes y servicios que intercambiaban, se emplearon como instrumentos de cambio y medio de pago las semillas de cacao, pedazos de ámbar, marfil o jade, piezas de metales -como arandelas de cobre-, las cuentas ornamentales, determinadas especies dulces (clavo de olor, canela, pimienta dulce), la sal e incluso el ganado vacuno. En la época prehispánica -comenzando en la cultura Valdivia- el Spondylus (concha de un molusco) fue el medio de cambio y funciono como moneda primitiva. Muchos historiadores coinciden en que las primeras monedas que se conocen se acuñaron en el reino de Lidia, en lo que son las provincias de Esmirna y Manisa de la actual Turquía, hacia el año 700 allá por el siglo VII a.C. Algunas monedas eran de oro, otras de plata y también existieron las manufacturadas de una aleación de los dos metales. La moneda más antigua de la que se tenga registro se conoce como 'Lidian Lion' y fue acuñada por el rey Alyattes de Sardes.
