Handley Cross

'Handley Cross: Or Mr Jorrocks’s Hunt' is a cornerstone of Victorian sporting literature and one of Robert Smith Surtees’ most celebrated satirical works. The narrative follows the boisterous and comedic adventures of John Jorrocks, a wealthy but unrefined Cockney grocer whose singular passion in life is fox hunting. When the aspiring spa town of Handley Cross seeks to elevate its social standing by establishing a formal hunt, they appoint Jorrocks as their Master of Foxhounds, setting the stage for a series of riotous social encounters and sporting mishaps.Through the character of the irrepressible Jorrocks, Surtees offers a sharp and humorous critique of 19th-century British society, social climbing, and the eccentricities of rural life. The work is renowned for its vivid depictions of the hunting field and its rich, colloquial dialogue. As Jorrocks navigates the complexities of provincial politics and the physical demands of the chase, the novel provides an enduring portrait of English character and the obsession with sport. 'Handley Cross' remains a vital piece of literary history, blending slapstick humor with keen social observation to create a masterpiece of the sporting genre. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
