“Voy a hablar de Granada, o mejor dicho, voy a escribir sobre Granada unos cuantos artículos para exponer ideas viejas con espíritu nuevo, y acaso ideas nuevas con viejo espíritu”, así comienza esta obra, un conjunto de textos en los que Ganivet, valiéndose de los recuerdos de su ciudad natal, lanza una crítica al desarrollo urbano del momento y determinado progreso material que considera exagerado y destructor. Los artículos se publicaron por entregas en El defensor de Granada entre el 29 de febrero y el 13 de abril de 1896, enviados por el autor desde Helsingfors (actual Helsinki, capital de Finlandia), donde trabajaba como cónsul de España. La primera edición en forma de libro aparece también en esta ciudad y ya en 1904 se publica en 1904 en Granada, también a cargo de El defensor de Granada.
