El relato se centra en la incidencia de esa guerra en la sierra de Bentomiz y villas de la jurisdicción de Vélez-Málaga. La batalla y subsiguiente masacre del Peñón de Frigiliana acabará con la vida de un arriero morisco vecino de Torrox y de casi toda su familia, pasando el testigo de protagonista a sus dos hijos menores, niño y niña, supervivientes desde entonces en la ciudad de Málaga, a la que fueron conducidos bajo la condición de cautivos.
