Desde a antiguidade, as civilizações antigas utilizaram técnicas para satisfazer as suas necessidades. Os egípcios e os gregos aproveitavam o calor do sol. Os persas utilizavam moinhos de vento. A energia fóssil é uma forma de energia não renovável. Esgota-se e tem efeitos nefastos para a saúde e para o ambiente (ciclo inevitável do carbono, fator determinante da ESM). A energia é renovável quando a sua fonte é inesgotável ao longo da vida humana e, por conseguinte, é rapidamente renovada. As energias renováveis são conhecidas como energias limpas. Representam uma alternativa aos combustíveis fósseis, que são finitos e responsáveis por uma grande parte das emissões de gases com efeito de estufa. Têm grandes benefícios ambientais a longo prazo. No entanto, não devemos acreditar que são milagrosas. As energias renováveis não são neutras em termos de carbono e cada uma delas tem os seus inconvenientes. O que têm em comum é o facto de produzirem poucas ou nenhumas emissões poluentes, contribuindo assim para combater o efeito de estufa e o aquecimento global.
