La eutrofización de las aguas es un problema de contaminación que afecta a numerosas reservas de agua de todo el mundo. Con la eutrofización proliferan gran cantidad de microalgas entre las que se encuentra el género Microcystis. Éstas pertenecen al grupo de las cianobacterias y son especialmente peligrosas debido a las toxinas que contienen, por ejemplo, la microcistina LR. Por este motivo, es necesaria la eliminación de estas algas de las aguas para consumo humano en las plantas potabilizadoras. En este libro se resumen los resultados obtenidos al tratar agua del río Guadiana (a su paso por Badajoz, España), que contiene el alga Microcystis, mediante un proceso de coagulación empleando coagulantes de origen natural y comparando la eficacia de éstos con coagulantes de uso estándar como el sulfato de aluminio. Se ha estudiado la influencia de diferentes variables experimentales, se ha realizado un diseño estadístico de experimentos con el fin de conocer las condiciones óptimas de operación y se ha realizado un ensayo en una pequeña instalación planta piloto con el fin de trabajar en unas condiciones más próximas a las de las estaciones de tratamiento de aguas potables.
